Don’t be afraid of COLOR!

So many people are afraid of color; but have a little courage and you can transform the look of a room or an entire house should you choose to do so.

I have just finished a complete re-design on a house in Dallas, Texas. The most common remark is about my use of color. So many people are afraid of color; but have a little courage and you can transform the look of a room or an entire house should you choose to do so.

When do you make a decision to go with a strong color? If you will go to my gallery and click on the library you will see a dramatic use of red. Why did I choose such a primary color for this room? Here you have a small room right off the entrance hallway. It’s virtually too small to serve any practical purpose, so why not turn it into a real conversation piece!

In its original incarnation, it was a drab and predictable dark ugly oak. A big hulking cabinent dominated the room. My clients were very brave and decided to go along with my “wow” factor choice of a brilliant red. The red led me to the idea of a quasi-chinese theme for the room. Black and red are traditional chinese color schemes and I decided to take that one step forward and stain the floors ebony black and trim the room in a dark green. Suddenly the room had its own glamorous personality.

The owners of the house had a beautiful japanese ceremonial kimono and we decided to hang it on one of the small side walls. We mounted it on a plexiglass hanger which made it appear to be floating in front of the wall. We then lit the bookcases and filled them with the owners extensive collection of books. Two chinese chairs and a striking desk were added and suddenly Cinderella was ready to go to the ball!

What could have been an insignificant room that you just passed by was turned into a show stopper.

It was COLOR that saved the day.
